In the first of two new treatments for bipolar disorder, a new antidepressant is testing.
But what is new in the new treatment is the number of people in the study who had taken the first of two new drugs, but didn't take their first one — and didn't know which one to take.
A new study was published in the May issue of theNew England Journal of Medicine, which reports that two new drugs are showing promise as antidepressants. The first was the antidepressant Celexa, which was developed by Eli Lilly and GlaxoSmithKline and is used to treat depression.
"These drugs have been shown to be effective in treating depression in children and adults," said Dr. John P. McAdams, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, who led the new study.
The first of two new treatments was approved by the FDA in 1996 and has been called the first of the three major new drugs on the market. It was called Effexor, which was developed by Merck & Co. and was marketed by Eli Lilly and Co. But Effexor didn't sell. That drug was marketed as Celexa.
In 1997, the FDA approved Celexa. It was also marketed as Zoloft, and it was used to treat depression. (The drugs are also used to treat depression, and Zoloft is used to treat depression in children.)
It was hoped that it would be effective in treating depression, but that wasn't always the case. When Zoloft first came on the market, it was called Prozac, but that drug was rejected twice because it was too strong.
In 2004, the FDA rejected Zoloft, and Zoloft's label switched from Prozac to Effexor, so that Celexa was approved.
But Effexor was not approved.
Michael E. Schott, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania who led the new study.
The new drug studies were done on people who were taking Effexor, but they did not have to take the drug every day to treat their depression. The new drug studies looked at how a person's body changed after they took their first one.
"We wanted to see if the drug was working," Schott said. "We wanted to see if it was a good idea to take the drug a few times a week, and then see if it worked."
The new drug studies were done on people who took the new drug for more than two years. But they didn't have to take the drug every day.
People in the new study were given the second drug, Vioxx, and then a placebo. They took Vioxx, and then another person took the placebo. The results showed that people in the new study were more likely to use Celexa than those in the placebo group.
"It was interesting," said Schott. "It looked at how the body changed after taking the drug, and it looked at how long it took the drug to work."
The new study was done on people who took Celexa in the second year of taking the drug. That person was taking Zoloft, and that person took Effexor. The results showed that the person in the new study was less likely to use the drug a few times a week.
People in the new study were given Zoloft in the second year of taking the drug. They took Effexor in the second year of taking the drug. The results showed that people in the new study were less likely to use the drug a few times a week.
It took one person's dose of Zoloft to cause an increased risk of suicide and depression, Schott said.
"In this study, the person taking Zoloft in the second year of taking the drug took an average of two to four times a week," Schott said. "There is a lot of uncertainty around how long the drug should work."
In the study, people who took Zoloft in the second year of taking the drug were more likely to have depression than those who took the placebo.
People who took the drug in the first year of taking the drug were more likely to have a suicide risk of about 8 percent, compared with the placebo group. That is about a quarter of people taking Zoloft in the second year of taking the drug.
